Our municipality is served by a number of connecting roads, linking the region to major North American markets.

Highways include:

• Highway 401 runs east-west through Toronto-Kingston-Cornwall-Montréal  
• Highway 416 runs north-south at the west end of the region
• Highway 417 runs east-west between Ottawa and Montréal
• Highway 138 runs north-south from Cornwall and Highway 401 to Highway 417
• County Road 2 runs east-west through the region, between Highway 401 and the St. Lawrence River
• County Road 31 runs north-south from Ottawa to Highway 401
• County Road 34 runs north-south from Lancaster and Highway 401 to Highway 417
• The  International Bridge links the municipality (Cornwall) to northern New York (Massena)

Our highway system puts your company within a day’s drive of northeastern North America including Toronto, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Detroit and everything in between.

The municipality is serviced by the Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National Railway, both with main lines running along the Québec City – Windsor Corridor. Spur lines connect the main line to Iroquois, Chesterville, Cornwall and Morrisburg, with in-facility loading docks and rail spurs available at several manufacturing sites and in our industrial parks.

Our municipality is located on the St. Lawrence Seaway, one of the most important domestic and international transportation systems in the world. The Seaway serves an area containing nearly a third of the combined populations of Canada and the United States. Companies located here find the Seaway's deep sea ports of Cornwall, Montréal, Prescott and Iroquois to be close, convenient, and effective.

The Port of Prescott

Owned and operated by the Corporation of the Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, this port is approximately a one hour drive away from SD&G. The port provides efficient, reliable and affordable inter-modal dry bulk infrastructure to foreign and domestic distributors.

 

The Port of Montréal

An international port linked to more than 100 countries around the world, this port handles 20 million tonnes of highly-diversified cargo annually. It is a leader in the North Atlantic container market, providing year-round service to locations worldwide.

 

Iroquois Harbour, Seaway Lock & Control Dam

This port passes from New York into Canada and, west of the Iroquois Lock, allows access to the St. Lawrence River through the Thousand Islands and into Lake Ontario.

 

Universal Terminals

Located near Morrisburg, this privately-owned, full seaway draft dock offers a full range of services, including open storage, adequate turning basin, potential rail spur to the Grand Trunk mainline, and easy access to Highway 401.

 

Cornwall Harbour

Located on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, this harbour serves as a strategic mid-point on the Seaway. This harbour entry point is well suited to industrial water transportation, with its fully serviced entry facilities.

The municipality is close to international and domestic airports, connecting business to the world.

Aeroport International PE-Trudeau de Montreal 

About an hour drive from anywhere in SD&G, this airport has direct flights to more than 100 destinations and handles a total of 1463 weekly departures and 10.9 million passengers in 2005.

 

Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport

About an hour drive from anywhere in SD&G, this airport handles around 156 daily direct flights to points in Canada, the United States and Europe.

 

Toronto Pearson International Airport

About a five hour drive from anywhere in SD&G, Pearson is Canada's busiest airport and ranked 29th busiest in the world. The airport handled more than 28 million passengers in 2004 and 30 million in 2005 and serves as the primary hub for Air Canada.

 

Massena International Airport

The Massena International Airport, also known as Richards Field offers commercial / commuter air service through Big Sky Airlines under the Delta Connection. Flights connect customers in this Northern New York community to Delta’s gateway at Boston, with additional connection options to Albany via Watertown.

 

Syracuse Hancock International Airport

Approximately a three hour drive from anywhere in SD&G, this airport offers service from 17 carriers.

 

Cornwall Regional Airport

Located within our municipality, this airport has a single paved runway and operates a domestic and international charter flying service.

Via Rail

Stations are located in Casselman, Alexandria and Cornwall.

Greyhound Bus Lines

Depot is located in Cornwall.

The road system is governed by policy of County Council, under the authority of the Municipal Act, and managed by Benjamin de Haan, P.Eng., Director of Transportation and Planning Services.  Transportation Services administers and maintains approximately 982 km of road and 195 bridges (95km urban streets and 887km rural roads).  Accordingly, the Department is also responsible for features such as ditches, vegetation, street lights, traffic signals, storm sewers, culverts and signs.

The Department operates out of four patrol garages (Winchester Springs, Finch, Green Valley and St. Andrew’s West) with an outside workforce of over 30 personnel.  Administration is provided from the Counties main office in Cornwall.

Transportation provides services in areas such as:

• Design, tendering and contract administration for annual capital works projects;

• Equipment and fleet tendering and maintenance;

• Maintenance & in-house reconstruction;

• Roadside mowing;

• Plowing and other winter maintenance;

• Traffic Counting;

• Issuance of a variety of permits (moving, setback, entrances etc…);

• Pavement marking;

• Installation and maintenance of roadside signage.
